Balfour Beatty Rail Projects Limited (BBRP), the leading international rail engineering, design and construction business of Balfour Beatty plc, has been awarded the GE OLE Rationalisation Bridge 19 to Forest Gate Junction contract near Liverpool Street Station in London. Awarded by Network Rail, the contract, worth over £3 million, involves the modification of the existing complex overhead line system on the Great Eastern Main Line at Bethnal Green, Stratford, Maryland and Forest Gate. This design and build contract includes the installation of 44 overhead line structures, together with the installation of 56 new structural foundations.
Keith Hampson, Interim Managing Director, BBRP, said: “This contract will enable Balfour Beatty Rail Projects, and in particular our Chelmsford based electrification unit, to further demonstrate our extensive in-house capabilities. We shall be utilising our wealth of experience gained on projects such as West Coast Main Line to carry out the project safely and efficiently. As a company, we have a lot to offer to the overall GE OLE Rationalisation scheme and our major customer Network Rail.”
Due to the busy urban location of the works, one of the key challenges facing the project team is carrying out the modifications to the overhead line equipment whilst still allowing train operations to continue on the line.
As well as improving reliability and performance on the line, these works will also allow the system in the area to be completely upgraded with a more modern system in the next few years.
The project is the first stage of the GE OLE Rationalisation scheme, which is a larger project to upgrade the overhead line equipment on the Great Eastern Main Line from Liverpool Street Station in the City to Chelmsford and Southend Victoria. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2008.
