Balfour Beatty Rail Projects (BBRP) carried out the construction of Lines 4 and Line 4A on the Santiago Metro in Chile, connecting Puente Alto and the southeast of the city.
The project was undertaken for Metro de Santiago and involved the installation of trackwork and conductor rails to form the new lines. The 33km double-tracked main line runs at grade, in tunnels and across a viaduct and includes 47 turnouts.
The works also included the installation of track at two new maintenance depots where a further 8km of ballasted track and a further 49 ballasted turnouts were constructed.
The track type used on this line is unique to Chile’s network as it was installed as conventional steel wheel on steel track. This differed from the previous systems in Santiago which involve the use of a rubber-tyred vehicle system on a concrete base.
