The scope of work was as follows:
- Design and build a condition monitoring system for point machines
- Secure all necessary safety approvals and install and commission system at a trial site (Norton Bridge)
- Evaluate data from point monitoring system and recommend a production version system with optimum parameters linked to Network Rail business case
- Install Event Recorder for relay interlocking and provide Asset View
- Develop and implement condition monitoring for signalling power supply system
Site details are as follows:
- Point Monitoring - Total number of points
- 8 No. style HW 2000 point machines at Norton Bridge
- Event Monitoring at Norton Bridge interlocking:
- 16 Switches / Points
- 150 Track Circuits
- 30 Signals
- 20 Miscellaneous assets
- Signalling Power Supply Monitoring
- 3 Principal Supply Points
- c.18 Functional Supply Points
The Event Monitoring system is similar to that installed at London Bridge and Ashford for Network Rail.
The Point Monitoring system, Switch View, utilises sensors that are fitted to each point machine or its associated signalling equipment to measure the following analogue parameters:
- Motor Current
- Motor Voltage
- Actuation Force
- Lock position
- Rail Temperature
- Sole Plate / Lock Rod Temperature
The Balfour Beatty Rail Technologies Limited project team constantly evaluates data from Norton Bridge, which is fed back to the client's project team for action. Network Rail's business plan recognizes the value of this system of remote condition monitoring to predict degradation in advance, prompting preventative action and eliminating equipment failure. Client feedback has been very positive and we look forward to securing further business from this project.
