Switches and Crossing Critical Junctions Survey
As part of our TSERV008 Consultancy Call-Off contract with Network Rail, Balfour Beatty Rail Technologies has been contracted to carry out the Re-Alignment Designs for selected junctions within the national 100 Critical Junctions Project. The objective of the 100 Critical Junctions Project is to carry out centrally funded heavy maintenance work to improve train performance. Work currently progresses in the Wessex, Sussex, Kent, East Anglia and East Midland Areas.

By carrying out site surveys and utilising recent condition data, a footprint design is produced for the project team and the local track maintainer which takes account of the performance of the junction and the ease of future maintenance. We ensure that the scheme is achievable during the design process by close liaison with the local maintainer. By combining our works programme with that of the maintainer we have also been able to produce designs in time for booked tamping shifts so that each pass of the tamper brings the alignment for that track closer to the ideal, holistic alignment for the whole junction.

During the process, we have installed permanent survey stations at each junction so that which will continue to be used for future checking of alignment post-tamping and any other works around the junction. This ensures achievement and future maintenance of footprint design.
